Root Directory
In computer file management system, the root directory is the top most directory in a hierarchy. Under the root directory there can be other directories and these directories can have many sub directories under it. From the root directory it becomes a tree where directories under the root directory are branches and under each branch there can be many branches. There my be upper limits in different file management systems as to how many directories and number of files can be stored. While designing websites, a hierachy for the files is planned in advance for directories or folders under which web pages are stored. Usually homepage is stored in the root directory and other pages may be stored in the root or other directory folders. During search engine optimization process the structure of the website and directory folder names and file naming conventions are also analyzed.
